His father, Harivansh Rai Bachan, was well known poet and his mother was Teji Bachan. His parents named his elder brother Ajitabh. After completing education in Uttar Pradesh, he moved to Bombay to cherish his dream to become an actor. In the beginning of the career, he did face rejection from the filmmakers as they preferred someone who had fairer skin.
