Kalanidhi Narayanan

Kalanidhi Narayanan is a classical dancer from India, who also teaches Bharatnatyam, which is one of the Indian classical dance forms to her students. According to her career horoscope, She was born on 7th December 1928, in Tamilnadu, in a Brahmin family to Sumitra and Ganapati. During her early life, her mother was very interested to get Kalanidhi dance education. With the support and encouragement of both her mother and father, Kalanidhi began her intensive training in dance and vocal lessons under several gurus. At that time, she was just seven years old. Her main dance teacher was the famous Kandappa Pillai, who also happened to be the teacher of the celebrated dancer, Balasaraswati. Kalanidhi Narayanan got her lessons on Art of expression from Chinnayya Naidu and Mylapore Gauri Ammal. Her debut stage performance happened when she was 12 in Chennai for the Madras Music Academy.

In her teenage itself, she became perfect with the art that she performed two prominent recitals, and she performed one of the two recitals with the son of her teacher, Kandappa Pillai. Kalanidhi was a non-devadasi girl who not only learnt dance but also performed it on stage with grace during 1930s and 40s. During 1940s, her mother expired and after that her marriage life starts as, she got married and settled in a conservative family. But that had concised her dance career in that time. Later in 1973, she made her come back, when Y.G. Doralswamy, the famous art patron, asked her to teach Abhinaya (Art of expression) to the dancer Alarmel Valli.

Her second innings in dance started after a break of 30 years and at that time, she was 46. Along with teaching her students, Kalanidhi also started educating herself and began giving performances in the city. She also signed up the dance theory course on Bharatnatyam, and constantly, her students increased and she went on to become the most favored Abhinaya teacher. This Celebrity celebrated her 75th birthday in 2003 with all her disciples and several dance teachers. That day was marked by a two day seminar on Abhinaya, which was participated by many well known dance gurus. In her career, she has taught this art to several students such as Ramya Harishankar, Uma Vasudevan, Minal Prabhu, Subashree Narayanan, and Priya Govind, who have now gained good name in this field.
