Javed Akhtar


The one name, in the Hindi film industry, that reminds of the most beautiful and above all, the most meaningful songs, is Javed Akhtar. According to his career horoscope, He is a poet and scriptwriter and mostly popular as a lyricist. Akhtar was born on 17th January 1945 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh and he is celebrating his 68th Birthday today. His father, Jan Nisar Akhtar was a poet and songwriter and mother Safia Akhtar was a singer. He is originally named as Jadoo and was later given this official name. Javed has a younger brother, Salman Akhtar, and he practices psychoanalyst in the United States. Javed Akhtar spent his childhood in mostly Lucknow, Aligarh and Mumbai with relatives after the demise of his mother. He did his matriculation from Aligarh Muslim University and B. A. From Saifiya College, Bhopal. In college, he often used to participate in debates and that won him the Rotary Club Prize many times. Career of Javed Akhtar started in Mumbai in 1964, where he wrote a dialogue for a minor film for just Rs. 100 and at times, he also used to work as an assistant.

His first movie as a scriptwriter was Yakeen. Later, he came in association with friend Salim Khan, father of Salman Khan, and both together has written the story for the film Adhikar. The duo, Salim-Javed together had worked as screenwriters and produced screenplays for many hit movies like Andaz, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, and Don. Apart from writing lyrics for films, he is also known for delivering wonderful Urdu poetry. His Achievements in his career include several major awards like Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards by the Government of India in 1999 and 2007, respectively, fourteen filmfare awards for best script and best lyrics for songs like Ek ladki ko dekha from 1942-A Love Story, Sandese Aate Hain from Border, Kal Ho Na Ho from Kal Ho Na Ho, Tere Liye from Veer-Zaara, and others. Javed also won five National awards, the 1995 and 1997 Screen Videocon Awards, Zee Award for best lyricist for Sandese Aate Hain (Border) and a Videocon Screen Award and Lux Zee Cine award for Panchi Nadiyan (Refugee).




The U.P. Government has also awarded him with the National Integration Award from the All India Anti-Terrorist Association and the Avadh Ratan. Akhtar also received the 2003 Hakim Khan Sur Sammaan Award from the Maharana Mewar Foundation, Udaipur. In his marriage life, Javed was previously married to Honey Irani and have two children, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar and both are successful directors. Javed remarried actress Shabana Azmi after his divorce from Honey Irani. Javed had worked with his son for several successful movies like Dil Chahta Hain, Rock On, Lakshya and with daughter for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Javed Akhtar is a Capricorn by his Zodiac Sign and this year is expected to bring him more success, peace and happiness in both professional and personal life.
