Kavita Krishnamurthy


January 25th marks the birthday of the popular playback singer of Indian films, Kavita Krishnamurthy Subramaniam. According to her horoscope, She was born in New Delhi in a Tamil Iyer family as Sharada Krishnamurthy and learnt music at a tender age. She was born under the sun sign, Aquarius and she is intellectual, honest, independent and helpful in nature. Her aunt Mrs. Bhattacharya was her music trainer and taught her Rabindra Sangeet. She learnt Hindustani classical music from a classical singer, Balram Puri. When she was just eight years old, she won a gold medal in music competition and also several such medals by participating in the Inter-Ministry Classical Competition during 1960s.

She recorded her first Tagore song in Bengali with the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar and composer and singer, Hemant Kumar, when she was just 9 years old. At 14, she moved to Bombay to make her Career as playback singer in the Hindi film industry. Kavita is a graduate in BA Honors Economics from St. Xavier's College, Bombay and was a part of the college's Music Group. She again met the composer Hemant Kumar, with the help of his daughter Ranu Mukherjee. He gave her opportunity as a singer during his live performances. She caught the attention of the playback singer Manna Dey who gave her the offer to sing advertisement Jingles.




Using her aunt's strong contacts, she met Jaya Chakravarthy, the mother of actress Hema Malini, who introduced her to the music director Laxmikanth. Her first song was Kaahe Ko Byaahi from the film, Maang Bharo Sajana in 1980 but that was removed during the film's final cut. She met success with her next hit song, Tumse Milkar from the movie, Pyaar Jhukta Nahin and following that, she started receiving several opportunities. The two songs, which made her Celebrity are Hawa Hawaii and Karte Hain Hum Pyaar from Mr. India (1987).




Her work in collaboration with the duo Laxmikanth-Pyarelal, gave her several hits. Kavita became one of the leading female playback singers during 1990s. She was popularly acclaimed for her song performance in the film 1942: A Love Story. The other films for which she was the lead singer were Yaraana, Agni, Sakshi, Bhairavi and Khamoshi. Her marriage life start in 1999. she married the notable violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam and from then, she became choosy about the songs. Kavita Krishnamurthy was featured as the main soloist in the album Global Fusion by Warner Bros.




She travelled all around the world and gave performances in places like London, New York, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Washington, D.C etc. Besides playback singing, she also sung as a soloist with orchestras, ghazals and devotional music albums like Shiva Shlokas, Aadi Ganesh etc. She is currently a judge in the show Bharat Ki Shaan on Doordarshan and she along with her husband, runs the music institute, Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts in Bangalore.
