Dina Pathak


Today is the Birthday of the veteran actress Dina Pathak. According to her birthchart, She was born on March 4, 1922 in Gujarat. Since her childhood, she was interested in fashion and films and started acting in plays at a very young age. She joined the Indian National Theatre and went to a college in Mumbai. At that time, she used a folk theatre named Bhavai theatre to create awareness about British rule and during that time, she, along with her sisters, Shanta Gandhi and Tarla Mehta, got associated with Indian People's Theatre Association. In 1948, Dina's career in films started with a Gujarati movie, Kariyawar. After this film, Dina Pathak went back again to theatre and formed her own theatre group named, Natmandal, in Ahmedabad.

She returned to films in 1966 with Uski Kahani that fetched her the Bengal Journalists Association Award. Following that, she worked in three other films in 1969, which are Hrishikesh Mukherjee's classic film, Satyakam, Saat Hindustani and The Guru, which came under the Merchant Ivory Productions. During 1970s, she became very popular for portraying the strong motherly and grandmotherly characters in both art and commercial movies and she is better known by Indian audience as the Grand Old Mother of Hindi films. This Celebrity was a part of some of the movies that stand out even today like Mausam (1975), Kinara (1977), Chitchor (1976), Gharaonda (1977), Bhumika (1977), and the comedy classic Gol Maal (1979).




The next decade saw her performing notable characters in films like Khubsurat, and Bhani Bhavai in 1980. In the same year, she also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. Dina is also a known face in television serials like the popular Malgudi Days, and A Passage to India. Later, she gave her career's best shot in films Mirch Masala in 1985, Tamas in 1986 and Ijaazat in 1987. She received nomination for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role at the 23rd Genie Awards for her role in Deepa Mehta's film, Bollywood/Hollywood. The last film she worked was Pinjar (2003) but she expired on 11th October 2002 in Bombay, prior to its release because of heart attact and prolonged illness.




Her maariage life statred when she was married to Baldev Pathak and actresses Supriya Pathak and Ratna Pathak are her daughters. Dina Pathak was an individuals born under the last Zodiac Sign, Pisces. According to her natural Horoscope, she was a stong willed woman who can recognize people from all walks of life and background. She was adaptable to change and understanding but her broad mindedness often made her misunderstood by others. Her compassionate and charitable nature were her great strengths all through her life.
