Rohini Hattangadi: a screen enigma


Rohini Hattangadi is one of the most celebrated theater, television and cinema actresses of India. Born on April 11, 1951 as Rohini Oak, Rohini is the only Actress from India who received the prestigious BAFTA award in the best actress in a supporting role category for her portrayal of Kasturba Gandhi in the 1982 movie Gandhi. She graduated from NSD that is National School of Drama, New Delhi and has won two filmfare awards and one National film award. Rohini worked in many theaters and stage plays with Husband Jayadev Hattangadi before debuting in the movies from Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan in the year 1978.




Rohini had an admiration for theater from her initial schooling days, she lived in Pune and though the prestigious films and television institute of India was in her native place, she chose the national school of drama New Delhi because of her love towards drama. Following her father’s words that true acting lies in Drama and not cinema she graduated from National School of Drama where she met her to be husband Jayadev Hattangadi who was from the same batch. She is now a renowned cinema and television celebrity and has played off beat roles winning her accolades from the critics as well as the fans.

Rohini Hattangadi celebrates her 62nd birthday today. Her horoscope says that she being an Aries born has the ability to influence people with her ethical and positive attitude. Her aries Zodiac Sign defines her personality as an enigmatic persona who can change or make a difference in the world with her positive attitude and matured nature. She has done more than eighty major cinemas and is still actively taking participation in the drama and television shows.




By playing the role of Kasturba in Gandhi she type casted herself with roles of middle aged women like Kasturba Gandhi. She was 27 years old when she played this critically acclaimed role. From then onwards she got more and more screen roles of characters which were middle aged. Rohini  started her theater career with Marathi stage plays along with her husband Jayadev. After graduating from the National School of Drama she and her husband together formed a Marathi Theater company titled aawishkar which later on staged more than 150 plays. She has also played major roles in Marathi television soaps and Hindi television serials like Ghar ki Lakshmi betiyaan where she played the role of a mother Baa and was appreciated for it. Ayesha Takia celebrated her birthday, yesterday.
