World's most renowned and intellectual personality Professor Amartya Sen celebrates his 79th birthday today. Born on 3 November 1933 in West Bengal, Amartya Sen's contribution to India and the entire world are remarkable. He is an economist and great philosopher. For his contribution to welfare economic and social choice theory, he was honoured with the Nobel Prize in 1998. Sen's best work, Poverty and Famines: An Essay on Entitlement and Deprivation, clearly explains the famine causes that includes food shortage, besides unequal mechanism in the food distribution. The tremendous impact of his work in the development economics, resulted in the formation of United Nations Human Development Index. Amartya Sen's article titled “More Than 100 Million Women Are Missing,” published in the New York Review of Books talked about how unequal rights between genders had a mortality impact in the developing world.

In the year 1999, he was also awarded with the nation's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna. Amartya Sen was honoured for Leadership and Service in USA with the Eisenhower Medal in 2000. And later in 2002, the International Humanist and Ethical Union presented him with the International Humanist Award. His work is so brilliant that his books are available in over thirty languages. The list of his honorary doctorates from the worldwide prominent universities, totals to more than 80 during 2009.
