Alka Yagnik

One of the most talented playback singers that Bollywood ever had is Alka Yagnik and today, she is celebrating her Birthday. According to her birth chart, Alka was born on March 20 1966 in Kolkata. Her mother, Shubha Yagnik was also Indian classical singer. Her career in singing started at the age of six where she sang for Akashvani (All India Radio). When she was 10, she moved to Mumbai as a child singer. First a letter of introduction was sent to Raj Kapoor, who had sent her to music director Laxmikant who then offered for either an immediate start as dubbing artist or a later break as singer. Alka chose the second option. According to her life report, In 1980, she got her first chance to sing for the film, Payal Ki Jhankaar, followed by Laawaris and Hamari Bahu Alka.

The song that won Alka Yagnik a big break is Ek Do Teen from Tezaab which is still a hit number today. Later, the film, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak changed her career. She became the leading playback singer since 1980s and she sung not only in Hindi but in other languages too like Gujarati, Bengali, Punjabi. Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam etc. The list of music directors and composers with whom she wrorked are Laxmilant-Pyarelal, Kalyanji-Anandji, Rajesh Roshan, A.R. Rahman, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Ismail Darbar, and many others. Alka also lent her voice for popular albums titled, Tum Yaad Aaye, Tum Aaye and Shairana and sung several devotional songs too.

She shares the title with verteran singer, Asha Bhosle for receiving the maximum Filmfare awards for the best female playback singer. She was selected as one of the judges on the singing shows, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge and Star Voice of India. One of her hit songs Chamma Chamma from the movie, China Gate was featured in the song, Hindi Sad Diamonds from the soundtrack of the film, Moulin Rouge. She travelled all across the world to perform in many concerts and live musical shows. Apart from winning several awards like Filmfare awards, National Awards, IIFA, Star Screen, and Zee Cine Awards etc, she was also felicitated by Union Minister For Human Resource Development for singing the song, Shiksha Ka Suraj alongwith Sonu Nigam as part of National Literacy Mission of India.
