Satyajit Ray


Today, the nation remembers one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of Indian and world cinema, Satyajit Ray, on his 92nd Birthday. As an honour to his immense contribution to Indian cinema, a popular search engine's doodle is showing a scene from his iconic movie, Pather Panchali. As per his Horoscope, he was born on May 2 1921 in Calcutta, Bengal to Sukumar Ray and Suprabha Ray and this family was known for its contribution to the field of arts and literature. Satyajir was barely three when his father died.

He completed his B.A. in economics in 1939 and in 1940 went to Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, founded by Rabindranath Tagore and learnt oriental art, miniature painting and even developed interest in films and music. In 1942, he left Shantiniketan and the next year, joined an advertising agency as a junior visualiser and became its art director after some years. In 1947, he along with Chidananda Dasgupta and others formed the Calcutta Film Society, where several foreign films were screened. After two years, he married Bijoya Das and had a son, Sandip, who is also a film director now. In 1950, the advertising agency sent him to London to work where he saw several movies that influenced and made him determined of becoming a film maker.




This Celebrity made his dream come true by directing his first film, Pather Panchali (1955) and released it worldwide. It became a box-office success and received Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. This film made him the world-class film maker. His next film was Aparajito and its trilogy, was very successful. The other popular works of Satyajit Ray that are milestones in Indian cinema are Parash Pathar, Jalsaghar, Teen Kanya, Charulata, Abhijan, Pratidwandi, Shatranj Je Khilari, Ghare Baire, Ganashatru, Agantuk and many others.




Satyajit received several awards and honours in his film career which include Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Academy Award, Bharat Ratna, National Film Awards and several other Indian and International film awards. In 1992, he suffered health complications and was admitted to a hospital. Just few weeks before his death, he received Oscar award in ill condition. He breath his last on 23 April 1992 at the age of 70. Later, many popular magazines have included his name in the list of all time greatest directors. Satyajit ray was born under the Taurus zodiac sign and he was an artistic, trustworthy and loyal person.
